(August 14, 2012)… The Iroquois Lacrosse Arena continues to host historic lacrosse events, as the Founders’ Cup calls the facility home for the next six days. Later today, the four-time Founders’ Cup champion Six Nations Rebels will gun for back-to-back Junior ‘B” titles.
The Six Nations Rebels Lacrosse Association will host the 40th Anniversary of the tournament from Tuesday, August 14th to Sunday, August 19th. In all, 10 teams will compete for the trophy that dates back to 1972.
“The Six Nations Rebels Association is thrilled to be hosting the 2012 Founders’ Cup and we look forward to welcoming the Junior “B” lacrosse community from across Canada who will enjoy a firsthand glimpse of the remarkable beauty and fabled history of Six Nations,” said Six Nations Rebels President Scott Maracle.
The Rebels enter the Founders’ Cup after capturing their fifth Ontario Junior “B” Championship Friday in Akwesasne. With the playoffs dedicated to the memory of teammate Carney Elijah Johnson, who passed away last week, Six Nations rallied for an emotional 11-10 victory to earn a 3-0 sweep of the best-of-three series. The Rebels are now bidding to win their fourth Founders’ Cup in six seasons.
Six Nations welcomes the lacrosse world to the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena, which houses its share of champions and historic lacrosse games. In May, the ILA hosted the inaugural Canadian Lacrosse League Finals. The Creator’s Cup Final between the Ohsweken Demons and Iroquois Ironmen was the first professional indoor lacrosse championship game between two First Nations teams.
Iroquois Lacrosse Arena serves as the practice facility for the 2012 World Champion Rochester Knighthawks. The three-time Mann Cup winning Six Nations Chiefs and two-time Minto Cup Champion Six Nations Arrows also play their home games at the ILA, which was built in 2004 with the support of Knighthawks Owner and General Manager Curt Styres.
The $7 million ILA at Six Nations has produced numerous NLL and Major League Lacrosse All-Pros. The list of players includes, but is not limited to, Cody Jamieson, Sid Smith, Craig Point, Alex “Kedoh” Hill, Andy Secore, Jeremy Thompson, Jake Henhawk, Delby Powless, Corbyn Tao and Johnny Powless.
