STEWART EDGES STYRES AT OHSWEKEN
07/31/2012 - 11:53am

(July 31, 2012)… Before the race, Tony Stewart said he wouldn’t mind finishing second behind Glenn Styres. But later that evening, Stewart edged Styres to win the main event at the Corr/Pak Sprint Cars at Ohsweken Speedway.

“Anytime Tony Stewart wins, it’s going to be on national TV all across America and Canada. It’s really going to help us out a lot,” said Styres, who also co-owns the speedway. “We were really close and I can’t believe how fast you have to go to keep up with Tony Stewart.”

Ohsweken Speedway welcomed back the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Monday night and “Smoke” did not disappoint the crowd that rose to their feet when he took the lead late in the race. Stewart, who also captured the B-Main, maneuvered his way from the 17th starting spot into the top spot.

“The race track was awesome tonight,” said Stewart. “It didn’t take much for them to get us out here. Everyone at Ohsweken was so great to us last year…we enjoy this.”

Stewart’s appearance was the first of two days he will spend at Ohsweken Speedway. The three-time NACSAR Sprint Cup Champion has teamed up with Glenn and track co-owner Curt Styres again this summer. He will defend his 2011 Six Nations Showdown victory tonight, which was his first World of Outlaw Sprint Car win.

Curt Styres evened climbed into his No. 85 Camaro and raced in the Free Stock Car Division. Curt serves as the Owner and General Manager of the Rochester Knighthawks, who won the NLL Champion’s Cup in May. The Knighthawks will make a special presentation to Stewart this afternoon to commemorate the team’s 2012 National Lacrosse League title.

This marks the second straight season that Stewart has raced at Ohsweken Speedway, where he won his first World of Outlaws race on June 27, 2011. Last season, Stewart outraced the field to jumpstart his NASCAR season. He won five of his last 10 races to become the first driver ever to come from behind to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship, winning the final race.
