(July 21, 2012)... Rochester Knighthawks forward Johnny Powless scored two goals to help the Iroquois Nationals claim the bronze medal at the U-19 World Lacrosse Championships in Turku, Finland. The Nationals defeated England 18-1 to finish with a 4-2 record.
Powless was one of two Knighthawks on the Iroquois team. Assistant Coach Jason Johnson was an offensive assistant coach with the Nationals. It was just two months ago, that the duo was hoisting the Champion’s Cup with the Knighthawks.
On Saturday, Randy Staats (pictured) led the Iroquois with three goals and three assists. Lyle Thompson and Hank Delisle each notched two goals and one assist. The Iroquois built a 9-0 first-half lead that increased to 15-0 in the fourth quarter. Warren Hill and Trey Adams both made three saves as they split time in goal.
Powless finished the tournament with nine goals and one assist in six games. The 19-year-old will return to the Six Nations Arrows for the Junior A Semifinals. Powless recently completed his first season in the National Lacrosse League with 50 points and added 11 in the postseason. The fifth overall pick of the Knighthawks won the NLL Sportsmanship Award and was an All-Rookie Team member.
